Trekking Tips

Protect Yourself

West Nile and Lyme disease are no laughing matter. Be sure to wear bug spray to prevent mosquito bites. A hat will also deter ticks and other pests from feeding off you. Long-sleeve shirts and long pants will also deter critters or protect against thorns and brambles.

Stay Hydrated

Water is a must, especially if you are hiking long distances or in the heat of summer. A reusable water bottle is well worth the investment. If you are hiking longer than an hour or on rugged trails, consider bringing along a sports drink that will replenish your electrolytes.

Use the Buddy System

It’s great to be one with nature, but it’s better – and safer – to hike with a friend. At the very least, you should share your route with someone in case you twist an ankle (or worse) and need to be rescued. If you must hike alone, be sure to carry a cell phone.

Wear the Right Gear

Running shoes are great – for running. Invest in a decent pair of hiking boots or trail running shoes, which will help you keep your balance on rocky trails. Consider also wicking materials for your shirts and pants to make you more comfortable in the heat.
